The lunar module was named Eagle for the national bird of the United States, the bald eagle, and featured prominently on the mission insignia. |

The command module was named Columbia for the feminine personification of the United States used traditionally in song and poetry. |
|
|
The command module was manned by Michael Collins. All three astronauts returned safely to Earth on July 24th 1969. |
|
The astronauts were placed in quarantine until 13th August 1969 for fear that the Moon might have contained undiscovered pathogens. |
