It seems unbelievable now, but
what you are seeing in these pictures, is what used to be the main road
from Rothes to Craigellachie and back, up until 1972 when a new bridge was
erected. The sharp corner
at the Rothes end of the bridge could not cope with today's large H.G.V.'s or
longer buses. Even in those
far off days, buses and longer lorries had to shunt a few times to get round the
sharp 90 degree turn at
the end of the bridge, whichever way they were going. Being so narrow, the
traffic onto the bridge was
controlled by traffic lights at each end. In some cases, with longer vehicles, the
bridge had to be avoided,
and a different route taken to get to Rothes or Craigellachie. Nevertheless this
bridge has been in place
for 193 years, and is still standing. I doubt if the replacement bridge will
still be there in the year 2165.
